The Press

A 100,000+ sq ft, part refurbishment, part new build, science and innovation campus in the hear of the Cambridge Southern Cluster.

History

The original buildings were constructed as a printing works in 1909 together with a series of workers’ houses to the north along Station Road. These buildings remained as an operational printing press until the early 2000s when they were converted and subdivided to office units.

The high-volume space, combined with a pitched roof with north light saw-tooth forms create an exceptional opportunity to provide truly unique lab space with a warehouse aesthetic.

Concept

The Press was our first Cambridge acquisition, located in the Southern Cluster, home to the UK’s highest concentration of biotech companies.

The 8-acre campus, located a 5 minute walk from Foxton Station (providing direct sub-10 min journey times to Cambridge and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus from 2025) provides the opportunity to deliver a range of building typology suitable for Science companies at varying stages of company growth. This includes fitted lab suites in Phase 1, larger scale R&D in Phase 2 and volume lab space suitable for a wider variety of uses in Phase 3

Above all, the brief for Owers Warwick Architects was to deliver a space where people want to work, collaborate and socialise. The campus will provide a new café, open to the community and occupiers alike, as well as newly landscaped gardens and internal atria for informal gatherings.
